Lionel Messi and Argentina advance but 'will always let you down' – Steve Nicol | Copa America

ESPN FC’s Steve Nicol, Paul Mariner and Dan Thomas react to Argentina’s 2-0 win vs. Qatar at the 2019 Copa America in Brazil. While the win puts Argentina through to the quarterfinals, Nicol and Mariner are far from impressed with the performance, and they question whether Argentina is capable of winning the competition for the first time since 1993. Nicol slams the Albicelestes as a team of individuals, pointing out that even star players Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero don’t appear to be on the same page. Plus, the panel examines why Messi is so often the difference maker for Barcelona but can’t replicate that success with Argentina.

  1. Main question should be (and any journalist/pundit/commentator/… should ask it any single time over and over again : how in the world did we get Qatar in the Copa America??? (of course the only reason is money…)

  2. Messi walks slowly and missds 2 big chances
    Dybala changes game and assists
Aguero plays well and has great run
    De paul plays amazing

Steve Nicol : mEsSi iS oNlY pLaYeR mOviNg arOuNd

  3. Qatar had so many chances to tie or even win the game they just got unlucky. Argentina BARELY made it through thanks to Aguero's goal

  4. ARGENTINA isn' t a team but this nation is very lucky, they are always depentants on results of the another teams in his group as at the wold cup 2018, more a present for them for the quarter finals they play the VENEZULA, finally they haven't won a match vs an South AMERICAN team, they won just an ARABIAN TEAM the QATAR

  5. The only reason i watch this pale Joker, Steve Nicol, is because he's such a soft target.

Just a clueless mumbling Joker. Barely makes any sense. Doesn't use any stats or quantifiable measurements or even facts to showcase his point. Just spews nonsense.

How does that man have a job in football? It's beyond me

  6. ONE suggestion, get rid of that awful goal keeper! He always makes mistakes and is a quarter of the reason they get scored on, however the majority is the rest of the players. This feels like watching a generic team playing, never seen argentina play so terrible for years and with all that talent? The coach can also try his other players out hes bring players from other leagues than europe, hell try them out wattuh got to lose now? It can only improve sense their style is different then Europe

  7. If they keep playing like this, they will advanced.
Kun, Lautaro and Messi would kill anyone.
But I would try Kun, Dybala and Messi to start.
Would love to see the connection Dybala-Messi.

  8. What makes me laugh about Ronaldo fans is they now use the international trophy point to claim he's better than Messi. This was a fan base who before 2016 were never able to use that as part of their argument. It's pretty clear that Ronaldo before 2016 was at a better level as an overall footballer, which only makes it even ridiculous to claim he's better based on winning one. Also, if international trophies are the marker of the greatest then there are many players who would be seen above Messi and Ronaldo for winning the world cup.

A team trophy should never determine who the better player is. Not to mention, the difference in Ronaldo winning at international level and Messi not has been down to fine margins. One was fortunate enough to have teammates step up in finals and the other wasn't. Messi though on an individual level has obviously proven himself at that level. To be top scorer for your country is an achievement itself, let alone make finals and win best player awards at tournaments.

  9. I don't understand why icardi is never in this Argentina squad it's honestly unbelievable he would actually give them goals and lots of it. I reckon if icardi was playing Messi will get credited for icardi scoring goals

  10. Venezuela will progress quite easily. This Argentina side is an absolute shambles and I honestly believe beating Qatar is the best this side can manage at the moment. End of the road for them. Disastrously bad this tournament from front to back. Everything is just so poor. Venezuela lucky to draw Argentina.

  11. Tactics and the pressure on Messi aside , for me, Argentina's biggest undoing has been their team selections. Absolutely criminal team selections. They've built a team with no spine whatsoever. The only Argentina centre back I've been impressed by since the likes of Walter Samuel retired is Ezequiel Garay. And yet they haven't played him in a major tournament since Copa America 2015. He was solid, imposing, a leader at the back and a big reason they made it to the World Cup Final in 2014. He's only 32 which really isn't old for a CB (may even bring some experience) and he's exactly what they're missing. Pair him up with someone like Pezzella or Mercado, or even play all 3 together, with Saravia/Pereyra and Tagliafico given more license to attack down the wings and suddenly you've got your defence sorted out. Otamendi and Foyth simply aren't good enough for Argentina. Rulli should arguably be playing over Armani too. I'd go with this

    4-1-2-1-2 ('diamond')

    GK: Rulli
    RB: Saravia
    RCB: Garay
    LCB: Pezzella
    LB: Tagliafico
    CDM: Paredes
    RCM: Lo Celso
    LCM: Banega
    CAM: Di Maria
    RS: Messi
    LS: Aguero

  12. It’s astounding how long Argentina keeps using a broken formula time and time again. We saw it in the world cup and the past Copa Americas. The team relies only on Messi

  13. As you can clearly see it was Aguero and that other dude who made Argentina qualifie, when they reach the final they all will forget and say Messi carried Argentina as is always the case ?

  14. How can Argentina win when they keep their best players on the bench and used some stupid players from no where. Damn I hate it when I sow Dybala on the bench and Argentina struggling to score.

  15. only 4 teams get eliminated in the group stage. plus they have 2 teams invited from weaker federations. it's virtually impossible for a team like argentina to get eliminated. it really is a sub-par tournament. only a few really good games.

  16. Stevie are you insane? Did you even watch the match? To say that Aguero was the best player for Argentina is totally not true. He fumbled too many balls in front of goal, lose many balls and couldn't make a proper pass. To me Aguero was one of the worse player b4 he score the gold

  17. It’s crazy that they seem to always have conversations like this about Messi and Argentina, but never about Ronaldo and Portugal ???

Cristiano is a true leader and the better player. He can thrive on any team, while Messi is strictly a Barcelona prospect. He’s great, but Cristiano is greater.

  18. Argentina may make mistakes.but Aguero and Martinez missed good chances and with these kind of attitude people will say they are the same and what difference Aguero and Martinez converted their chances it will be oh they won its just Qatar.please for God sake at least appreciate they got a win instead of always criticising them a win is just a win.Brazil drew with Bolivia there was no fuss about that so just shut up these is actuaclly not helping at all.
