Barcelona used to be Lionel Messi's 'refuge' from Argentina, are the roles now reversed? | ESPN FC

Following Lionel Messi and Barcelona’s defeat vs. Real Madrid in El Clasico, ESPN FC’s Sid Lowe joins Dan Thomas to react to Messi’s individual performance. Lowe questions Messi’s drive to win the game after Sergio Ramos’ penalty gave Real Madrid the lead and adds his Barcelona teammates looked to him to start a comeback that never materialized. Lowe also dives into the debate surrounding Messi’s desire to play for Barcelona, saying «he looks much happier playing for Argentina these days,» when it used to be that Messi seemed happier playing for Barca than his national team.

  1. Winning is as good as Loosing becasue they both go hand in hand so guys stop HATING ACCEPT YOUR DEFEAT …..JUST DUST OFF YOUR SHOULDER AND TRY AGAIN ……SO STOP HATING STOP YOUR HATE ON MESSY HE'S ONLY HUMAN AND NOT A MACHINE …SO SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE AND MOVE ON ….

  2. Why give the armband to a player who's not happy in the team. And why should everything in Barcelona be about Messi. Come on.. stop all this useless fanboying. Barcelona is bigger than Messi. And he's going to leave the club someday and of course, people will say that he was one of the greatest players ever. But if the management doesn't fix the team now, it will end up being a useless team and people will say, Barcelona was once a good team. I believe that there are better leaders than Leo, and there are good players who can step up and do well when he 'disappears' as people call it. Fix the team's problems and if Leo is part of the problem, let him go

  3. FOR THOSE WHO THINK MESSI IS BETTER THAN RONALDO…MUST KNOW THAT MESSI'S HEIGHT IS NOT ORIGINAL,HE USED HORMONES AND REACHED ABOUT 170 CM OTHERWISE HE WOULD REMAINED AT 150 CM…GOOGLE IT….ON THE OTHER HAND CRISTIANO RONALDO IS SELF MADE NO USE OF ANY MEDICINES FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE!!!

  4. Sport has reported that the referee is a confessed Real Madrid fan who has worn Real Madrid Jerseys under his uniform in the past. His father owns a Real Madrid Fan club. You make what you want of this info. I have concluded he is biased, hence his rewarding that ridiculous penalty call.

  5. it’s true about how messi was wanting to move back in the transition, b u t it’s already ongoing season now, a good player will just focus to strive and making the best of it. However Messi has usually been passive whenever the situation called for like more expressive leadership, direction, and direct encouragement; but come on, even on the pitch, who has that kinda traits in the team right now? Pique? Alba? De Jong? Coutinho? Teenager? Last time it was Xavi and Iniesta.

  6. Problem with Barcelona is ! Players got mad when they ditched Valverde coz if you look at stats ? Barca lost coz players made some mistakes like Dembele missing am awesome chance , players got lazy altho ik they didn't have better plans or tactics . Then Messi said he wants to leave , now when players makes such a decision ? He won't be same no matter who you are . Even today Barcelona is dependent on Messi coz when he plays good ? They play good & when he doesn't add Goals or assists , they struggle . Ik it takes time to build a team but when the news like Xavi is coming , this is happening in management & stuff like that comes out ? Teams struggle. It takes a lot of time to make a team . Ac milan is still waiting, Liverpool had to wait so much , PSG finally went to final after so many years , United is still struggling . The thing about these clubs is – when they had a taste of success , they forget that times can change & it takes time to win back that glory . Fans start to crash out & eventually the boss gets fired . Messi gonna make city way better coz this guy can provide everything from mid to attack.

  7. Sorry but Messi is done he will win nothing more with Barcelona 5years already without winning the champions.. bad decision of staying in Barca throwing away there years he have left..

  8. Messi : More talented
    CR7 : Better football career
    Winner: CR7

With Messi’s natural talent it shouldn’t even have been close … he should have been ahead of CR7.

But CR7 winning mentality kept him more hungry even now when at 35 years old. CR7 is also the reason why Messi even challenged himself to do most of what he did in his own career … Lesson is hard work with some talent is superior to just amazing talent.

  9. Do people really think Messi was "committed" when Barcelona were being thrashed by Bayern? When they lost to Liverpool at Anfield, or to Roma in previous seasons? Messi not showing much when Barcelona (or Argentina) are in trouble has been going on for several years now.

  10. Well he cant perform knowing the team not up to the challenge! Having greizmann next to him is an insult by itself, where is the striker in the team?? Do you think messi doesn’t understand what is required to win??

  11. The big problem is barca are not pressing aggressively high up the pitch and their defence is a big head ache I don't understand why they're not buying which can track back and have positioning on the ball. They don't require Griezmann, Dembele they are of no use. Now it is very much clear why messi wanted to leave at the 1st place their is no specific position for him.
In midfield they need somebody very very aggressive like de bruyne , Henderson who can press.
