Little Known Facts About the United States Football League

The United States Football League was a short lived professional football league that started as an alternative to the NFL in the mid 1980’s. The league featured some great players that would go on to star in the NFL, and even a few that made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Today, the USFL is looked back upon by most football fans as one of the more interesting and exciting things that had come along in the history of professional football. Here are five little known facts about the United States Football League.

-The USFL-NFL trial that effectively ended the league’s existence lasted 42 days.

-Video clips from a Memphis Showboats game are used as background football images in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.

-The first former USFL player to make it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame was quarterback Jim Kelly who played with the Houston Gamblers before going on to star for the Buffalo Bills and take them to four straight Super Bowls.

-The first player ever drafted out of college by the USFL was Dan Marino who was picked with the first overall pick by the Los Angeles Express. He was also drafted by and chose to sign with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL that same year.

-When the USFL sued the NFL alleging antitrust violations, every NFL team except the Los Angeles Raiders was listed as a co-defendant. Raiders owner Al Davis was a witness for the USFL and therefore was spared being a defendant in the suit.

Teaching Young Players the Secrets of Successful Handball in Australian Football

Handball is one of the two ways in which a player can dispose of a football legally in Australian Football. Initially, it was used to dispose of the football when the player was tackled and unable to kick the ball. It was developed into an attacking weapon during the 1950s by Geelong’s super star ruckman, Polly Farmer.

This article is not about the technical skill of handballing but rather it is designed to advice the coach of junior players on how best to use handball effectively both in attacking and defensive situation.

It is important that right from the beginning, young players must practice equally handballing with both hands. This can be achieved by creating pairs of players in lines, two metres apart, handballing to each other with alternate hands and then gradually extending the distance between the players to lengthen the handball. This should be a regular practice activity. This activity allows the players to handle the football many times in a short time. Obviously, the players should be taught how to handball correctly. The players should also practice different types of hand balls- the rocket handball as well as the one the rolls end over end.

Once the warm-up handball exercise is completed, simulate handballing in a game type situation. During these simulations, insist that the players do the following to enhance the effectiveness of their handball.

Players must aim the football chest high in front of their team mate. They should aim the football into the space in front of their team mate forcing the player to accelerate to catch the football. This will help that player avoid being tackled by an opponent.

The football should float in a slow looping movement to make it easy for the team mate to catch the football.

The player with the football should always turn towards the player to whom he/she is handballing.

The handballing player must follow the handball to retrieve a poor delivery, shepherd the team mate receiving the football and/or receive a follow-up handball.

It is important that the player wanting the handball should call loudly for the football and the handballing player should acknowledge that call.

It is important to stress that players should never handball to a player close by because he/she will be under pressure and likely to be tackled. It is better to handball in space in front of your close team mate forcing him/her away from the defender and after the ball. For this type of situation, teach your players to handball so that the football will roll end over end bouncing up regularly to make it easy to gather the football.

Teach your players to give an attacking handball at the first opportunity or not at all. In other words «don’t telegraph it» I. e. let the opponent know you want to handball.

At times, players will need to make a defensive handball if they can’t kick or have no support of a team mate. It is important that they handball as far as possible towards the boundary and follow up the handball and keep moving the football forward while waiting for team support. The important advantage the player has here is the player knows where football is going and therefore has «the jump» on his/her opponent in regathering the football.

All of these ideas can be simulated in practice drills and mini games. In particular, use games involve handballing, running as well as tackling and shepherding in a restricted area e. g. the centre square.

Barcelona's struggles reminiscent of Lionel Messi with Argentina – Ale Moreno | Champions League

Barcelona turned in another listless performance vs. Slavia Prague, drawing 0-0 in their 4th group stage match of the UEFA Champions League. Alejandro Moreno of ESPN FC says the game reminded him of how Argentina plays with Lionel Messi in the sense that 10 players were left waiting for Messi to work magic to get a result.

Is Australian Football Really «Aerial Ping Pong»?

Growing up in Queensland after World War Two, I only became aware of «Aussie Rules» when I was at primary school in grade four. My school offered both Rugby League and Aussie Rules as winter sports. I chose to play our Australian game. I soon learnt it was called «Aerial Ping Pong» by the supporters of the other game which was by far the most popular football played in the state.

In hindsight, back in the mid-twentieth century, I can see the justification for this belief. The football was often dropkicked high in the air to be caught above the head or knocked away from the marking player. Each mark or free kick often resulted in a stoppage where the attacking player kicked the football from behind a mark indicated by the umpire. So the game was somewhat static.

After every scrimmage/stoppage, the football was bounced in the air for a rucking contest like a tip off in basketball. The football could be handballed or knocked forward; kicked off the ground and the team scored by kicking the football through the four goals posts. There was tackling but within certain rules. All in all, the football spent a lot of time in the air.

However, the term, «Ping Pong» implies a soft game. Here is where the nickname of our national game was so misleading. Australian football is a 360 degree game. There is no off side. Players can be tackled, pushed or bumped from any direction. In those other football games, the tackler is in front of the player. So the players see the tackler coming. Added to that point, there are 18 opposition players ready to tackle, push or bump as opposed to 13 or 15 in those Rugby games.

The modern game of Australian Football ridicules that nickname.

It is the game that has

  • The largest oval;
  • It has the most players involved of any football game actually on the oval playing;
  • It is played for the longest time.

The modern version sees players running constantly from end of the field to the other. (The oval is an ellipse about 160 metres long with a width of 120 metres at the centre of the oval. The Rugby game ovals are rectangular and only 100 metres long.)

Tackling has become a feature of the game. The tackling seen in the game is as strong as is seen in the Rugby games except it tends to be one on one tackles. The aim of the tackler is to dispossess the player of the football and put them on the ground.

Because the game is so fast with lots of running and fierce tackling as well as high marking, the injury toll has increased from basically soft tissue injuries to knee reconstructions, concussion, broken bones to name just a few injuries.

The game has become so quick, that it is now umpired by two or three or even four field umpires depending on the particular competition at open level.

A player of our Australian game must master many more skills than in the Rugby games. The player must be able to kick both feet with a variety of kicking styles; handball different ways with both hands; spoil a mark; be able to bump and shepherd an opponent; dodge around players; run swiftly bouncing a ball; pick a ball up off the ground running at pace and kick goals from all angles.

Finally, the game at the highest level has become professional with almost daily training and playing taking up all but 4 weeks of the year.

Gambling With Your Coat On – Change the Way You Bet on Football

Ask a simple question – how do bookies make money – and you’ll likely get a fistful of answers, the most popular being a shake of the head or a shoulder shrug. Or both. The real answer is actually rather prosaic. They make money by setting odds on an event that ensure that they maintain a profit margin regardless of the outcome. This is known as ‘margin’. This is why odds on outcomes change as more money is wagered – the bookie is mathematically manipulating the odds to preserve their advantage. This is known as keeping the book balanced.

Clearly there are other factors involved, such as an intricate understanding of the sport/event in question, but essentially that’s it. It stands to reason, therefore, that the bookie is basically trying to make money whatever the outcome and isn’t relying on luck. Take it a step further and you’ll realise that it must follow that the bookies are counting on relatively small margins, often as little as 4% or 5% and that, therefore, bookies depend on large numbers to make their money.

And there you have it – small margins and large numbers. Or put another way, little and often. Simple isn’t it?

What’s this got to do with you? Well, if the bookmaker doesn’t believe in luck and is quite happy to make a relatively small profit on a wager – (in percentage terms, remember, little and often) – then why not you? If you want to consistently profit in gambling, then you need to start betting smarter. You need to retrain your mind. Start thinking like a bookmaker.

This is not as easy as you might think, however, for the simple reason that most people gamble with one aim in mind – to get in return significantly more than they stake. Understandable but, ultimately, flawed. Even experienced bettors make this mistake. And it’s a mistake that the bookmakers cherish and encourage. Consider this: why are bookies seemingly delighted to publicise the punter who wins £10,000 from his seven horse 50 pence accumulator? Why would they be so happy to lose so much money? For the simple reason that they know it happens so infrequently. They know for every 1 winning seven horse accumulator there will be tens of thousands of others that will lose, so it’s ultimately in their interests to encourage this kind of rainbow-chasing.

So that’s the message of this article. Start retraining yourself. When people bet on football over 99% of them will wager in multiples – accumulators to you and me. A 4 team accumulator, for example, or a correct score double, typically to return at least 5/1, usually much more. Test your resolve. Try betting in singles. Try increasing your stake by much smaller margins, 60% or 80% or 110% or the like. In those three examples a £10 stake will give you a profit of £6 or £8 or £11. Instead of saying that’s hardly worth it, start the retraining by saying a £6 or £8 or £11 profit is perfectly acceptable and you’re on your way. Next time I’ll tell you how you can take your new philosophy to the next logical level.

Oh, and good luck.
