High School Football – The Basics and Some Do’s and Don’ts

Well first off – this is just my opinion but here are some of the basics that I try to follow as a high school football official:

Player safety – the one thing I consider THE most important.   Always keep an eye out for player safety:

  • Clipping
  • Illegal blocks – chop blocks, block in the back, etc.
  • Face masks/pulling of the helmet openings/or chin strap – with twisting of the helmet
  • Unnecessary roughness – yeah it’s football – but an unnecessary hit to a player totally away from a play or a hit with intent to harm needs to be controlled

Slow down the game – make sure you see what you call.  It’s better to get the call right than to rush it.

Position, position, position – coaches and fans hate when a call is made 30 yards away from a play; and you know what – so do good officials.  Be in the correct position to make a call or to observe the play.   This is easier said than done and takes practice and good field mechanics.  KNOW WHERE YOU BELONG – AND BE THERE.

Communication – solid communication with your other officials is extremely important.  This starts with a pre-game dialogue. Talk about key aspects of the game, kicking game – position duties during kickoff and scrimmage kicks, measurements, etc.  just to name a few.

Whistle in Your Mouth? Do not officiate with a whistle in your mouth – chances are this is going to get you into trouble sooner or later by blowing an inadvertent whistle and if you do – own it, get over it, and learn from it.   It happens at all levels!

Read and study the rules – just about every chance you get.  It’s every official’s job to know the rules – not just the referee or umpire.   Sooner or later when communicating a call with the other officials you may be asked for clarification.  And sooner or later if you do this long enough your position is going to change – you may find yourself as the referee (white hat) one day.  Know the rules and learn them.  I will start covering some of the key rules in a future posting.

Lastly – have fun, an open mind, and always learn from what  you did during the game.  Keep a journal of what happened during each game, and set goals for yourself!

Soft Hands Training: How To Catch Every Ball

He was born with soft hands. The so-called experts want you to believe this. It is not the truth. Anyone who is willing to follow my simple instructions can develop soft hands and become more than proficient at catching footballs.

There are three options available when preparing to catch a football with your hands. The first option, move your hands toward the football. This is the worst of the three options. When you move your hands toward a fast-moving football, you turn your hands into a virtual baseball bat. More than likely you will, at contact, repel the oncoming football and miss the catch.

The second option is to keep your hands still. It is not quite as bad as option one, but it still sets up a situation where your hands act like a backboard that could easily repel the football. Most football players catch this way. Teaching them to use their fingertips help, but it is not the best solution to the problem.

The third option, the one I recommend and seems to be instinctively used by most successful wide receivers who have been deemed to have «soft hands». It is to move your hands slightly backwards, about a thumb to a middle fingers length, right before the ball makes contact with your hands. You create a basket like effect. For a short period of time your hands match the velocity of the football, in the same direction of course, and then slow down to secure the catch. It creates less chance for repelling the football and missing catches.

The motion is similar to those of a tennis player when an errant ball comes his way. He simply reaches out with his racket and catches the ball. It seems like the ball just sticks, almost magnetically, to the racket. However, it is the rapid acceleration and then deceleration of the hands that makes it work.

Wide receivers, grab an old tennis racket and a tennis ball. Start by holding the tennis racket in your dominant hand and tossing the tennis ball up in the air with your non-dominant hand. Once the ball bounces, point the head of the racket toward the ball so it will potentially make contact with the strings on that end. Right before it makes contact, rapidly accelerate the decelerate the racket and bring it to a horizontal position to cradle the ball, and thus catching the ball. After you have mastered the bounce, try throwing the ball in the air and catching it out of the air with the racket using the same technique. Once you master this technique you will be on your way to being a better receiver.

Law 11 – The Most Controversial Law in Football

The most controversial law in the game of football is that which deals with off-side. It is highly technical, radical and extremely difficult to implement but obviously interesting when properly applied in a match situation. Center referees and their assistants are usually encouraged to exhibit awareness in the application of this very sensitive and controversial law.

One unique thing about the off-side rule, is the fact that world governing body-FIFA usually changes the rules periodically and also confer on the assistant referee the power to rule a player who is in an off-side position of play. The center referee following the determination of his assistant can make the final decision to stop the game.

Thus the need for the assistant referees to be totally focused throughout the duration of the game cannot be compromised as a lack of concentration can prove very costly. A 100% surety and attempt to be in active play by an attacker directly implies the assistant referee will flag for off-side positional play. To flag for an off-side position of play, two conditions are involved:

Position and activity/position without activity
The fact that an opposing player is in the opponent half of the field does not necessarily constitute an off-side position of play. The active participation of the player is very important when making a call. The guilty player must have an intention to interfere with play before he is punished for off-side position of play.

The assistant referee must therefore ensure that before the flag is raised, he/she must be absolutely sure that the player is:

  • involved in active play
  • interfering with an opponent
  • seeking to gain undue advantage by being in that position

FIFA laws of the game normally undergoes review periodically hence the need for referees and their assistant to familiarize themselves with the current additional rules. The controversy surrounding this rule made FIFA and some Football Association to sanction the use of a fifth referee who usually stands by the goal line during matches.

Exceptions to the rule
A player cannot be adjudged to be in an off-side position of play when he/she receives the ball directly from:

  • a throw-in
  • a goal kick

Physical and mental fitness is required among referees to ensure that one is not too far from the actual position of play. When a referee is not physically or mentally fit, the tendency to commit error in flagging becomes inevitable.

In conclusion, a player cannot be said to be in an off-side position of play if he/she is not interfering with play. This means that it is not an offense in itself to be in an off-side position. A call is made by the assistant referee when a player is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the 2nd but last opponent.

7 Things To Consider When Buying a Pair of Football Shoes

Today, opting for a new pair football shoes is becoming harder for beginners. Buyers have to consider a lot of factors when searching the web and buying the best product. Given below are 7 things that you should consider when looking for the best product.

1: Style

The last that you should influence your buying decision is style. Just because a product looks stylish doesn’t mean it will meet the functional needs as well. So, what you need to do is be careful when looking for a pair and don’t make your decision based on the advertisements alone.

2: Durability

All products should be durable and this applies to football shoes as well. If the shoe you buy falls apart as soon as you get out of the store, it will be a waste of money. Although looking for a durable product is difficult, it’s not beyond anyone.

3: Materials

Typically, the materials have a direct impact on the durability of a product. If you opt for a synthetic shoe, the upper may withstand the wear and tear and you will enjoy a luxurious feel.

4: Fit

Today, sneakers are made and designed with a narrow last. So, they are fit for people with regular but narrow feet. However, they are not suitable for those who have wide feet. Typically, shoes with plastic-based synthetics are not that comfortable.

In the same way, shoes made with raw materials are not suitable for people with wide feet. These players should go for a pair made with suede and leathers as they tend to stretch and break-in with the passage of time.

5: Outsole

Although it’s a great idea to choose sneakers that offer great traction, these shoes may not be suitable for all types of surfaces. Rubber is a good choice as it works for all types of surfaces. You may want to ensure that the rubber is fine as for as pattern, softness and thickness is concerned.

6: Cushion

The comfort of football shoes depends on its cushioning. It may not be easy for you to choose a pair that offers great cushion for your feet. Your best options include air-based and foam-based cushions. What sets the two apart is the level of responsiveness.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to your personal preferences. If you want to invest in a new pair for the entire year, you may want to get an air cushion. However, if you need a pair just to play for a few weeks, you can go for a foam cushion.

7: Price

If you have a budget, stick to it. For instance, if you have set aside $200 bucks for your football shoes, don’t shell out $300. Keep in mind that you have to learn to live within your means.

Long story short, if you are looking for the best pair of football shoes, we suggest that you consider these 7 tips. This will help you get the best pair to meet your sport needs.

Game Preparation – The Pregame Address in Australian Football

In 1968, I was in my second year as the coach of the Queensland state secondary schoolboys team competing in the All Australian National Football Championships in Melbourne. Our first game was played against Western Australia on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the home of our national game. It was a great thrill for the boys to play there and for me to be the coach.

Below are the notes I made to speak about or do prior for our first game in this National Football Carnival. Prior to the naming of the team and the pregame address, I talked to each team member and checked how they were feeling.

These are the points I made to the players. As a young coach, I now realise, that I most likely spoke for too long and said too many things. But, being from the football developing state of Queensland, we were in a teaching mode with our boys. We needed to continue to emphasise the basics of our game plan until they became second nature.

  • Play on whenever you can. Play tight; tough; in front; inside your man and move the ball wide in the backline.
  • Team work: remember to back up; keep talking; watch carefully when the football is two kicks away and keep shepherding.
  • Tackling must be hard/tough. Contest everything; smother the ball; and chase everyone.
  • Positional Play:

Forwards-flankers must play wide; look for crumbs; be steady in front of goals; keep talking and look for your full forward.

Backs- should be tight; shoulder to shoulder with their opponent; play inside your man; and used long driving kicks. With kick outs from fullbacks, rovers must be in front of the pack and wingers behind the pack.

  • Kicking-always use drop punts when passing or otherwise long driving kicks straight down the goal to goal line from the centre. Note the effects of the greasy ball and the wind and use them to your advantage.
  • Note that the oval has wide wings and pockets deep. Use north side of oval to attack.
  • Warming up: It is essential to do it well
  • Football will skid. So watch for the ball flying over the back of the pack in high marking contests. Keep the football in front of you always and soccer the ball when you don’t pick t up cleanly.
  • Umpiring-play the whistle.

I made this point strongly because in the same game in 1967 in Hobart Western Australia kicked two goals when a defender claimed to the umpire that he had touched the marked football twice. The Western Australian simply played on while this occurred to kick two goals

Some observations:

  1. There were not many experienced junior club or school coaches in Queensland in the 1960s. So we had to educate the players about the whys and wherefores of the game. Given that, the length of my team address might have been justified. This would not be the case in the 21st century as I write this.
  2. The team had a number of players in the team who were at their second All Australian Carnival. Their experience helped improve the performance of the team keeping it competitive for most of each game. Fitness and the skill levels let the team down as tiredness crept in late in each game.
  3. Players from the less successful junior clubs in our team learnt quickly from our training program and outperformed their top club rivals. Often we used these players in new positions to see them flourish.
  4. The players found the softer grounds in Melbourne difficult because they were used to the ball bouncing higher on the firmer grounds in Queensland.
  5. The players found the umpire’s interpretation of the rules different to what occurred back home.
  6. It is important for the reader to understand that the game has changed dramatically since these notes were used. Some may seem irrelevant in the 21st century.

Youth Football, Who Goes in What Position in Youth Football? How to Put Players in the Right Spots

Evaluating Youth Football Players

Evaluating youth football players either for a draft or to determine positions is one of the most important but most poorly performed tasks done by many youth football coaches. Too often a player is assigned a position because he «looks» like the position without regards to the skills required of that specific position. Often times kids that look like football players or are the sons of coaches are given preferential treatment and are selected for the «skill» or glory positions. Another mistake many youth football coaches make is they evaluate kids for skills in a way that has little or no correlation to what actually are critical success factors to performing well on the football field. Quite often a player is assigned a position based on just one required attribute of that position without regard to the entirety of skills needed to play the position.

I Made the Same Mistake

The end result is you often have youth football teams that don’t perform anywhere near the potential of the aggregate group. So often when I’m asked to come in and trouble shoot poorly playing teams, they have kids in the wrong positions and the disparities in players is blatantly apparent if you know what to look for. Early on in my coaching «career» I too was bamboozled by the physical appearances of players. One of my first years coaching a tough talking 10 year old kid showed up to our first practice, he had «the look» a Mohawk haircut, shirtsleeves torn off, scowl/I want to tear your head off look on his face and he was a stocky but solid 120 lbs. Heck I would have guessed he had a pack a day cigarette habit from the attitude he put off, we were drooling at the thought of having him playing football for us. On the other hand there was this skinny quiet kid with a crew cut, and only 8 years old, probably weighed less than 65 pounds. He looked like one of the kids most coaches probably pray the DON’T get at first glance.

Looks Like Tarzan, Plays Like Jane

The Mohawk kid turned out wasn’t in very good physical shape, which isn’t a real big deal, but he was an excuse maker as well. He was one that questioned every drill and when he didn’t win a drill (we do almost everything in competition format) he had an excuse, he slipped, he started late, the other kid cheated, he had overeaten that day. In addition to all that, he didn’t have very good body control. He could move fairly well straight ahead but when he went to make a turn of cut it was like he was trying to turn the Titanic, he couldn’t do it. His core strength was terrible and his quickness was awful. While there are some technique and core strengthening movements we can do to improve this, even dramatic improvements would still have this player in the bottom 20% in this critical area.

Looks Like Jane, Plays Like Tarzan

On the other hand the shy scrawny 8 year old seemed to be a natural when we did our games/drill that revealed core strength. During the Dummy Relay Races, he was able to not only lift and maintain the balance of the dummy but he was running with it, where others were doing a wobbly jog. During the Towel Game, he always drug his opponents to the cone, showing excellent leg strength, natural leverage and heart. Even in the Sumo Game he showed excellent trunk and leg strength, tenacity and great natural leverage. The Deer Hunter game in my opinion is the best and most fun way to determine a players»football speed». Football speed means the ability to start, stop and accelerate in small spaces, being able to change direction and control your body to escape the «hunters». Our scrawny little 8 year old excelled at this drill, while our Mohawk was the first one out.

Doing Accurate Evaluations

The net is you cant judge a book by it’s cover and you HAVE TO measure kids to reveal their football playing skills, not how fast they can run 40 yards or how many pushups they can do. How many times in a football game do kids actually run 40 yards? And how often are 40 times actually accurate? The answer to both is rarely to never. What does a pushup prove? Upper body strength does very little to aid your linemen in his blocks, a proper block places much more emphasis on foot speed, trunk and leg strength as well as attitude and aggressiveness. Some say you can’t test for toughness, resiliency, tenacity or aggressiveness until the kids put the pads on, that is simply not true. So according to those that believe you can’t put kids into positions until you put the pads on for at least a week put themselves WAY behind. For them it is a crap shoot until the 2nd or 3rd week of practice. The Towel Game, Sumo Game, Dummy Relay Races and to an extent the Deer Hunter reveal all these traits without wearing pads.

If you are drafting players you have a huge advantage if you know what to look for and how to look for it. If you don’t have a draft, being able to evaluate kids properly is STILL a huge advantage because you can assign positions earlier, put your schemes in quicker and you don’t waste a ton of time shuffling players from position to position to position like a church social cake walk until you find the right spot for the poor confused player.

Making It Fun

If you can make the evaluation process fun for the kids it is an added bonus. The first week of practice the kids and the parents are paying close attention to the fun factor and you. You can make some huge deposits in the emotional bank accounts of the parents that week if you can make the evaluations fun. We use all the above mentioned fun evaluation games during the evaluations of my teams and they are all found in my book. I’ve found the drills/games are so effective we are able to put kids into the correct positions after the first practice with a 95% success rate.

The first game we are almost always significantly ahead of our competition, even though we always practice less. A big factor has to be being able to do accurate and effective evaluation and early placement of players.

The evaluation should be preceded by making sure you have very detailed descriptions of the requirements of each position on your team so you know which skills you are looking for to make the best fits.

The Ultra in Unusual but Effective Evaluation Drills/Games

Here is a very interesting method one High School uses to evaluate it’s players, the Rabbit Catch. Bobby Bowden even thinks there may be merit in this unique assessment practice. Think about how closely this activity mirrors what successful football players do on the field on game days. Notice the 4 State Championship Rings on the Head High School Coaches hand.

For those of you that are using my system, doesn’t this look very similar to our Deer Hunter drill/game ? Evaluate your players well and you will not only be well ahead of your competition, but you will have much happier players and parents.

2015 All Under-Valued Fantasy Football Starters

QB Ryan Tannehill (Miami) – Tannehill lived up to expectations in 2014 and delivered for over 4,000 yards and 27 TDs against only 12 INTs. He was second to Lamar Miller in rushing and he now has three fine young receivers in Jarvis Landry, Ken Stills and DeVante Parker who will mesh with the talented quarterback. Additionally, the Dolphins added the veteran presences of Greg Jennings and new TE Jordan Cameron, so the Dolphins have plenty of weapons. Tannehill is in line for a 4,500 yard season, and considering you can get him in the ninth round; those are good dividends.

Also consider: Philip Rivers (San Diego), Carson Palmer (Arizona)

RB Latavius Murray (Oakland) – Murray was finally given an opportunity late last season and shined. He has great speed and vision to go along with a solid 6’3″ 230lb frame. The only threat he has to his Touches is Roy Helu catching passes out of the backfield, but Murray projects to be a workhorse this season and should put up nice numbers, especially if QB David Carr continues to improve with each game.

Also consider: Carlos Hyde (San Francisco), Rashard Jennings (New York Giants)

WR Charles Johnson (Minnesota) – Johnson really gelled with QB Teddy Bridgewater last year as Teddy became more comfortable as the starting QB. In the Vikings last 7 games; CJ tallied 25 catches for 415 yards and 2 TDs. With the addition of RB Adrian Peterson and WR Mike Wallace, I expect Johnson to have more room to run his routes and make many more plays than last year and many more big plays. Johnson has great size and an existing rapport with Bridgewater. Wallace is a bigger name but Johnson will have a bigger impact as is a steal in round 9 and beyond.

Also consider: John Brown (Arizona), Marques Colston (New Orleans)

TE Richard Rodgers (Green Bay) – Actually, Rodgers qualifies as more of a true Sleeper than merely under-valued. Earlier this summer, the concern about Rodgers was how often QB Rodgers would look his way, but, since the season-ending injury to WR Jordy Nelson, Rodgers becomes more of a factor in the offense as defenses key on WR Randall Cobb and Rodgers looks to a group of relatively unfamiliar targets in Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery and Richard Rodgers. He is definitely worth a late pick in deeper leagues.

Also consider: Jordan Cameron (Miami), Charles Clay (Buffalo)

D Minnesota Vikings – the Vikings defense played very well last season, especially after the offense began to perform better. The entire unit is young especially as the offense matured and stayed on the field longer each game. This unit is young and fast. The front four are not household names, at least not outside of the state, but Brian Robinson, Shariff Floyd, Linval Joseph, and Everson Griffen are collectively more talented than 75% of the defensive front four units in the league. They were weak in the secondary last season but the addition of rookie Trae Waynes will help motivate the unit into playing better or losing their spot to him.

There are plenty of Cash Fantasy Football Leagues open that will be drafting in the next 2 weeks at MFS. You can check the list of Open Fantasy Football Leagues and find one or more than suit your needs and put this advice to use! This list varies a bit from a list of Fantasy Football Sleepers as these players are expected to have a good season, but their Average Draft Position does not reflect how good of a season they will have compared to others at their position.

Beating Teams That All-Out Blitz In Youth Football – Offensive Line Tricks

Are all Youth Football Leagues Competitive?

First of all let me start off by saying 95% of the people that e-mail me say they are in a very competitive league. The problem is there is no way 95% of us are playing in competitive leagues and many have no frame of reference outside of their league. Most teams don’t play outside competition, play in outside tournaments or go out of town to play, how would they know if they are truly playing in a competitive league or not? That’s why I always try and schedule at least 2 out of league games against teams from 2 different leagues as well as play in out of town tournaments if the parents agree to raise the money. Don’t fret because someone says or you think you are playing in a competitive league, it really doesn’t matter if your youth football league is «competitive» of not, competition is relative.

My teams have played in leagues where teams from our league have won National Unlimited Select National Titles ( Top Gun Division) in Daytona, Florida, considered by most to be THE most competitve tournament in the Country. This league has produced players like Dave Rimington (Outland), Ahman Green (NFL), Eric Crouch (Heisman) and countless others. We have won plenty of out of town tournaments ourselves at several age groups and always fare well against outside competition. We do just fine playing «competitive» teams, in fact we have a heck of a time getting teams to accept those games these days. My system has been successfully used from age 6-14 by hundreds of youth football coaches nationwide and came just a single point away from winning the Jr. Pee Wee Pop Warner National Championship last year in Florida.

So in a nutshell, yes the SIngle Wing no Splits system works in competitive leagues in the age group you coach and against the tactics you mentioned. In the above example just because all the teams in this youth football league utilize an unsound but aggressive defensive tactic does not mean they are somehow well coached or «competitive». Competitive may be the descriptive word used to describe the mental nature of these coaching staffs but to be «competitive» there has to be competence. In my mind the opposite would be true, if all the defenses in this league are the same and they all use the same unsound tactic every play. Those defenses and this youth football league seem to be very predictable and would be quite simple to beat with any reasonable amount of competent coaching. You often see this in youth football tournaments, beasts from XYZ league who have manhandled everyone in their league but who get creamed in the out state tournaments. They play in leagues where there is little «out of the box» thinking and many of the teams are intimidated by unsound but aggressive tactics. You would be quite surprised at how many blowouts there are at these things when these bully teams face a well coached team or one that is not intimidated by such tactics.

Crushing the Blitzing team

By not defending the entire field and massing all defenders in tight and coming every down, there are not levels of defensive pressure. A simple wedge play is usually quite effective against teams like this, even when they have 10 men on the line of scrimmage. Once the initial line of defense is breached it is usually a huge gain Tight splits like we use negate defensive presssure like this and many plays end up looking like a scene from the movie «The 3003.

We like to use these types of defenses aggression against them using «no plays» to mess their blitz timing off and running plenty of trap plays, screens, tight end dump passes ( off of an off-tackle fake) and straight ahead off-tackle runs. What doesn’t work are straight sweeps, deep reverses and deep drop back passes, football plays many youth football coaches run regardless of the effectiveness of the play. Running right at these types of defenses is almost always effective and something this offense does quite well.

Motioning against teams like this often give you lots of numbers advantages and either takes the defense out of the all-out blitzes or gives you wide open hitch, flat or screen plays. We’ve even been able to Jet Sweep a number of these type teams. I enjoy playing youth football teams like this that come in with a lot of bravado, makeup and jumping up and down antics, but usually have their tails between their legs by the 2nd quarter. They get very frustrated when they don’t get a bunch of negative yardage plays right off the bat or intimidate the offense. Obviously I’m not a fan of this backyard tactic, it works against only the poorest and least prepared youth football teams out there. You never see this type of defense at the big tournaments, those teams almost always get bounced early.

What is required in your team to defeat this tactic is confidence in your execution based on perfecting a base set of complementary plays in football practice and running everything north and south. A truly well coached team would have a field day with these types of defenses. You can effectively do it even without a big or dominating offensive line in youth football.

Cooling Vests to Protect Football Players from the Heat

It is August. It is summer. It is hot, and it is kick-off time across the country as pre-season football practice begins. Players will expect to get hot and sweaty, as their coaches attempt to whip them into shape. However a combination of hot/humid weather, tough conditioning drills and players unaccustomed to practicing in the heat, can make August a deadly and dangerous month.

Despite all the warnings, the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research reports that 24 football players (19 high school, 3 college and 2 professional) have died from heatstroke since 1995.

The main problem associated with exercising in the hot weather is the water loss through sweating. However drinking water is simply not enough. In extremely hot weather the body will sweat at a rate faster than water can be absorbed into the system. So how can we reduce the amount of sweating, while at the same time help the body to regulate its core body temperature?

The answer is the Arctic Heat Body Cooling Vest. A lightweight cool vest which will not only help to protect athletes from heat related illness, but it will also allow athletes to work harder for longer.

The Arctic Heat cooling vest was originally developed for football players in Australia and it now used by International teams in every other major football code in the world. Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer and Australian Rules Football all use the cooling vest to protect their athletes and to improve their performance. It was also used at the Athens Olympics by all the major sporting countries, including many of the USA teams. The military in Iraq are even using the Arctic Heat cooling vests.

«The Arctic Heat Cooling Vest, designed for football, will legally improve performance and will also help protect an athlete’s health,» said Dr John Surie, President of Arctic Heat USA.

The ice cold cooling vest can be worn underneath playing uniforms, it can be used as a pre-cooling device before conditioning drills, and it can be used as a recovery tool in between or after sessions.

Yet enquiries from local football teams have so far been limited. «There seems to be a different mentality in football that you have to run players hard and make them sweat, in order to toughen them up. We believe it is better to cool down and fire up athletes. Most other sporting codes in the world now agree with us,» said Dean Sainsbury from the Arctic Heat company.

Arctic Heat has also developed a range of unique cooling blankets and cooling caps which can be used to immediately treat players who have overheated. «The cooling caps can be used during a game to cool players down. When they come to the bench they can remove their helmets, put the cool cap on, and cool down,» said Dr Surie.

The lightweight Arctic Heat Cooling Vest uses a two stage cooling process. The vests contain a gel-like substance that can be frozen or chilled.
