10 Health Benefits of the Football Sport for Men

If you want to play football, you need to have a few characteristics, such as agility, footwork and endurance. The benefits of this sport can’t be counted, though. Although the game is popular in Latin America and Europe, Americans are also developing interest to participate in the sport. Every game has its benefits and football is no exception. Let’s take a look at some of the main benefits.

Aerobic Capacity

You need a higher degree of stamina in order to run for 20 minutes. So, football players have a great deal of aerobic capacity. They can walk or run for hours without getting tired. So, playing football will raise your aerobic capacity.

Heart Health

On average, a player runs for at least 5 miles throughout the game. So, the constant running, jogging and walking boosts the heart rate of the players. In other words, football is good for your health as it prevents the accumulation of plaque in the coronary arteries.

Muscle Tone and Body Fat

If you want to burn fat, it is one of the most appropriate sports for you. The reason is that it works your heart and muscles in more ways than one. Apart from this, the game helps you burn fat and build muscle mass.

Muscle Strength

During football, you don’t need much body strength for kicking, twisting, jumping and turning. Due to these activities, you develop muscle strength.

Bone Strength

As a general rule, as you get older, the density of your bones comes down. During a match, the repeated loads on your whole body make your bones stronger. So, if you want to keep the strength of your bones, make sure you play it on a regular basis.

Coordination

Coordination is a must for success because of the shifts between sprinting, running, and walking over and over again. Complex movements, such as passing, turning and dribbling also help you improve your coordination during the game.

Sharing and Teamwork

Although fitness goals are personal, all of us can benefit from football. As a matter of fact, your ability to work with other players to achieve a common goal goes a long way.

Brain Function

Since football is a fast-paced game, it helps you improve your self-discipline, persistence, and concentration skills. Even if the tempo slows down, you are after territorial advantages. You position yourself to get a pass or defend a certain area from the opponents.

Self-Esteem and Confidence

If you develop your endurance and physical strength, you can develop your confidence as well. With a higher self-esteem and confidence, you can perform well in friendships, family life, career and school.

Flexibility

You can play it anywhere, anytime. Since it’s not a prohibitive or expensive sport, you won’t have to meet strict requirements. As a matter of fact, it’s a relatively simpler game.

So, if you want to enjoy all these benefits, we suggest that you build a team, get out and play it. Hopefully, you will be able to get the most out of this entertaining sport.

How Taekwondo Can Help Football and Ice Hockey Players

Team sports are extremely popular worldwide because of their dynamic game play. But few other team sports are as popular as football and ice hockey. To clarify a common source of confusion by ‘football’ I mean soccer, and I am using the world football simply because the entire world excepting the USA refers to soccer as football. Some have called football the king sport because of the fact that it is simple to understand, it’s great fun and people know about it anywhere you go.

Ice hockey also has great popularity in many nations and it would probably be popular worldwide if it was easier to find ice in the hotter regions of the planet. All jokes aside, ice hockey is a serious team sport loved both by players and fans for its exciting style, elaborated tactics and the great skills needed to be a good hockey player.

As a Taekwondo instructor I have worked a lot with football and ice hockey players. The reason why such professional players would choose also to train in martial arts and especially taekwondo is that it helps their performance in their own sport. Taekwondo (TKD) is a famous type of martial arts mostly dominated by fast and explosive kicking techniques. For this reason, taekwondo training will help footwork, quickness and balance all very important both for football and ice hockey players.

The most important thing that a player can get with TKD training is flexibility and that helps prevent injuries especially knee and foot injuries. Feet and knees are essential for football and hockey alike. Both sports demand agility and often strain the athletes causing terrible injuries. Unfortunately it is common for football players and hockey players to suffer accidents during the game which sometimes prevent them from playing long periods losing time, training and money.

Not all the taekwondo styles are equal; my personal opinion is that a school that focuses on the Olympic style of sparring is the best choice for football players because training is focused on using legs, hips and the whole mid section.

If you are thinking of complementing your football or ice hockey training with taekwondo martial arts training the best thing is to find a good taekwondo school and talk with an instructor.

Because different players have different needs you should ask the instructor two basic questions:

1 How will taekwondo training help me?

2 What kind of taekwondo training do you provide?

For any questions or comments about finding good taekwondo schools don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yours,

Markku Parviainen

How To Put on a Successful Youth Football Camp

Football Camps For Youth Football Players

We do a one day camp in June or July. We have done week long and three day camps but now just do one day camps. Our goals for these pre-season camps are just to get a peek at what we have talent wise, get the kids to understand how they are to interact with the coaching staff and to have fun. We have an entire month to prepare for our first game, we can get any conditioning we need during regular football practice.

Conditioning this far out from the first practice and for such a short duration is counterproductive to what we are trying to accomplish during the camp. We feel very strongly that with the very narrowly defined football practice priorities we adhere to, we can get our evaluations, base skills and schemes put in during the one month of football practices prior to that first game. We found much of what the kids learned in these football camps was forgotten once we started in August and often the kids were playing different positions, once the teams were optimized. We don’t put in any of our football plays or playbook in during these camps.

We found anything longer than 2 hours in one day was counterproductive, even for the older kids. We rarely got much out of the kids once we hit that 2 hour brick wall, especially if it was hot. We don’t go over 1 ½ hours for the kids under age 8.

We always bring in at least one NFL player in to do a little talk at the end of the Football Camp. We have also called the Nebraska Cornhuskers and got players to attend from their FCA group, most University teams are happy to accommodate you, all you have to do is ask. The NFL guys can often get NFL money to pay for caps, t-shirts and food, every time we invited a local NFL guy they did this for us. All they ask you to do is to organize the camp, get the kids there and do a press release to get the media there.

Our format has changed quite a bit, but this is the one we use now:

Group Dynamic Warm Ups

Group Stance and Starts/Cadence

Mini Group Fun Competitions/Evaluations: This is where we do all of our fun team evaluation

games/drills detailed starting on page 69 of the book. This gets the kids pumped up and enthused about being at your camp and playing for your team and tells us what we have and where most of the kids will play.

Skill Development Stations (No conditioning or frappy agility drills)

Team Hawaiian Rules Football- On page 80 of the book.

When finished with the clinic the kids understand how they are required to interact with the coaches. As coaches we have a real good idea of the athleticism of our team in general and where 80-90% of our starters will be playing. The kids have fun and get a clear understanding that playing football for us can be both fun and rewarding if they follow a few simple directions that we will hold them accountable to. We often get more kids to join our program after the camp as parents and kids get very enthusiastic about how fun and well organized our practices are and often invite their friends to play for us.

Our youth football league has no restrictions on these type of activities, check your league for any restrictions and abide by them.

Football Freestyle in Holland

I’ve been to Amsterdam and Rotterdam several times, both in the center and in the small towns. Everywhere you can see Football courts, everywhere. Most of them are also lighten up during the night, if you want to you can play 24/7. Compared to other countries I’ve been to their football culture is so much different. In most countries you rarely sees kids playing around on the streets during the evening, they’re at home playing video games, watching TV or sitting at the computer. In Holland it’s very common that their parents send them out to play, they play with everything. You see kids in every corner playing football, juggling or trying some tricks. On every court there is most likely to be a couple of kids playing.

In Holland street football is very big, VERY big! They have monthly street tournaments with trophies and money. Football Freestyle is also big, but far away from the level street football is. Street footballers are even recognized at the streets in Holland. Some street players have achieved a lot of fame through their skills. They’re not wealthy or anything, but the underground scene have given them fame. Terms as «akka» and «panna» is known by every kid in Holland, at least 9 of 10. It’s street terms for some football moves.

Also Futbal is big in Holland. I went to a couple of games(1st and 2nd division) and there is always quite a big crowd watching, sometimes it’s even packed depending on which players are playing. If one team have a famous street footballer in their team it can be packed just because of that. People want the entertainment this individual will give. The skills those guys play with, it’s insane!

There is some players in the Dutch national team which were raised in the street courts in Holland. The most famous one would be Edgar Davids. He comes from the streets and he still plays there a lot. He even built his own court in Holland were kids can play. He arrange a street tournament as well and is in the Street soccer clothing company «Monta».

What I’ve seen this far is that Holland is way a head of every other country with street football(notice that I’ve not been to Brazil, they will most likely match Holland if not beat them).

How To Get The Best Football Boots In A Sale

Football boots sale can make it possible for you to get high quality footwear at discounted prices. Every player understands the importance of having a quality pair, especially one that is comfortable as a way of improving on performance during play. Online stores offering football boots often hold sales on popular brands and from such sales you can get the pair that you have been looking for to help you put your best skills to work. But how then do you choose the best from such sales?

Tip 1 – Buy only from reputable sites

Online stores that deal exclusively with football boots may be the best when thinking of making discounted offers work to your advantage. This is because such stores will have a huge variety to choose from and will not limit you to only a few. The larger the variety the higher your chances of finding one that you actually like at an affordable price. It is also important to remember that you will only get genuine ones from reputable dealers hence the importance of choosing only sites that have a good reputation.

Tip 2 – Check out sales

Football boots are from different brands and there are top brands known for their top quality craftsmanship. There is really no use of saving money on one that will not serve your playing needs appropriately. For this reason, when thinking of a sale, it is important that you check out what football boots are actually on sale. You might be surprised to find sales that feature the latest designs from the top brands thus giving you a chance to enjoy superior quality at a very affordable price.

Tip 3 – Think quality

Prices should not compromise the quality that you get to enjoy at the end. Just like buying any other item of footwear, ensure that you pay attention to what matters most even when buying football boots that are on sale. The design, materials used and added comfort features can guide you to the best pair for your play. If possible dig deeper into those on offer so you do not end up paying for football boots that have functional defects or manufacturing defects that could interfere with your overall play out in the field. It may be a sale, but you should still enjoy good value in the end; don’t settle for just any football boot because of the low price.

Tip 4 – Let your individual preferences guide you

Apart from getting functional, it is important for players to play in football boots they love. If the prices are enticing but you cannot seem to find a pair that you actually love, then it would be best that you do not make the purchase just to enjoy the low prices. Let everything that matters to you play a role in helping you make the perfect decision from the sales.

Little Known Facts About the United States Football League

The United States Football League was a short lived professional football league that started as an alternative to the NFL in the mid 1980’s. The league featured some great players that would go on to star in the NFL, and even a few that made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Today, the USFL is looked back upon by most football fans as one of the more interesting and exciting things that had come along in the history of professional football. Here are five little known facts about the United States Football League.

-The USFL-NFL trial that effectively ended the league’s existence lasted 42 days.

-Video clips from a Memphis Showboats game are used as background football images in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.

-The first former USFL player to make it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame was quarterback Jim Kelly who played with the Houston Gamblers before going on to star for the Buffalo Bills and take them to four straight Super Bowls.

-The first player ever drafted out of college by the USFL was Dan Marino who was picked with the first overall pick by the Los Angeles Express. He was also drafted by and chose to sign with the Miami Dolphins of the NFL that same year.

-When the USFL sued the NFL alleging antitrust violations, every NFL team except the Los Angeles Raiders was listed as a co-defendant. Raiders owner Al Davis was a witness for the USFL and therefore was spared being a defendant in the suit.

Teaching Young Players the Secrets of Successful Handball in Australian Football

Handball is one of the two ways in which a player can dispose of a football legally in Australian Football. Initially, it was used to dispose of the football when the player was tackled and unable to kick the ball. It was developed into an attacking weapon during the 1950s by Geelong’s super star ruckman, Polly Farmer.

This article is not about the technical skill of handballing but rather it is designed to advice the coach of junior players on how best to use handball effectively both in attacking and defensive situation.

It is important that right from the beginning, young players must practice equally handballing with both hands. This can be achieved by creating pairs of players in lines, two metres apart, handballing to each other with alternate hands and then gradually extending the distance between the players to lengthen the handball. This should be a regular practice activity. This activity allows the players to handle the football many times in a short time. Obviously, the players should be taught how to handball correctly. The players should also practice different types of hand balls- the rocket handball as well as the one the rolls end over end.

Once the warm-up handball exercise is completed, simulate handballing in a game type situation. During these simulations, insist that the players do the following to enhance the effectiveness of their handball.

Players must aim the football chest high in front of their team mate. They should aim the football into the space in front of their team mate forcing the player to accelerate to catch the football. This will help that player avoid being tackled by an opponent.

The football should float in a slow looping movement to make it easy for the team mate to catch the football.

The player with the football should always turn towards the player to whom he/she is handballing.

The handballing player must follow the handball to retrieve a poor delivery, shepherd the team mate receiving the football and/or receive a follow-up handball.

It is important that the player wanting the handball should call loudly for the football and the handballing player should acknowledge that call.

It is important to stress that players should never handball to a player close by because he/she will be under pressure and likely to be tackled. It is better to handball in space in front of your close team mate forcing him/her away from the defender and after the ball. For this type of situation, teach your players to handball so that the football will roll end over end bouncing up regularly to make it easy to gather the football.

Teach your players to give an attacking handball at the first opportunity or not at all. In other words «don’t telegraph it» I. e. let the opponent know you want to handball.

At times, players will need to make a defensive handball if they can’t kick or have no support of a team mate. It is important that they handball as far as possible towards the boundary and follow up the handball and keep moving the football forward while waiting for team support. The important advantage the player has here is the player knows where football is going and therefore has «the jump» on his/her opponent in regathering the football.

All of these ideas can be simulated in practice drills and mini games. In particular, use games involve handballing, running as well as tackling and shepherding in a restricted area e. g. the centre square.

Is Australian Football Really «Aerial Ping Pong»?

Growing up in Queensland after World War Two, I only became aware of «Aussie Rules» when I was at primary school in grade four. My school offered both Rugby League and Aussie Rules as winter sports. I chose to play our Australian game. I soon learnt it was called «Aerial Ping Pong» by the supporters of the other game which was by far the most popular football played in the state.

In hindsight, back in the mid-twentieth century, I can see the justification for this belief. The football was often dropkicked high in the air to be caught above the head or knocked away from the marking player. Each mark or free kick often resulted in a stoppage where the attacking player kicked the football from behind a mark indicated by the umpire. So the game was somewhat static.

After every scrimmage/stoppage, the football was bounced in the air for a rucking contest like a tip off in basketball. The football could be handballed or knocked forward; kicked off the ground and the team scored by kicking the football through the four goals posts. There was tackling but within certain rules. All in all, the football spent a lot of time in the air.

However, the term, «Ping Pong» implies a soft game. Here is where the nickname of our national game was so misleading. Australian football is a 360 degree game. There is no off side. Players can be tackled, pushed or bumped from any direction. In those other football games, the tackler is in front of the player. So the players see the tackler coming. Added to that point, there are 18 opposition players ready to tackle, push or bump as opposed to 13 or 15 in those Rugby games.

The modern game of Australian Football ridicules that nickname.

It is the game that has

  • The largest oval;
  • It has the most players involved of any football game actually on the oval playing;
  • It is played for the longest time.

The modern version sees players running constantly from end of the field to the other. (The oval is an ellipse about 160 metres long with a width of 120 metres at the centre of the oval. The Rugby game ovals are rectangular and only 100 metres long.)

Tackling has become a feature of the game. The tackling seen in the game is as strong as is seen in the Rugby games except it tends to be one on one tackles. The aim of the tackler is to dispossess the player of the football and put them on the ground.

Because the game is so fast with lots of running and fierce tackling as well as high marking, the injury toll has increased from basically soft tissue injuries to knee reconstructions, concussion, broken bones to name just a few injuries.

The game has become so quick, that it is now umpired by two or three or even four field umpires depending on the particular competition at open level.

A player of our Australian game must master many more skills than in the Rugby games. The player must be able to kick both feet with a variety of kicking styles; handball different ways with both hands; spoil a mark; be able to bump and shepherd an opponent; dodge around players; run swiftly bouncing a ball; pick a ball up off the ground running at pace and kick goals from all angles.

Finally, the game at the highest level has become professional with almost daily training and playing taking up all but 4 weeks of the year.

Gambling With Your Coat On – Change the Way You Bet on Football

Ask a simple question – how do bookies make money – and you’ll likely get a fistful of answers, the most popular being a shake of the head or a shoulder shrug. Or both. The real answer is actually rather prosaic. They make money by setting odds on an event that ensure that they maintain a profit margin regardless of the outcome. This is known as ‘margin’. This is why odds on outcomes change as more money is wagered – the bookie is mathematically manipulating the odds to preserve their advantage. This is known as keeping the book balanced.

Clearly there are other factors involved, such as an intricate understanding of the sport/event in question, but essentially that’s it. It stands to reason, therefore, that the bookie is basically trying to make money whatever the outcome and isn’t relying on luck. Take it a step further and you’ll realise that it must follow that the bookies are counting on relatively small margins, often as little as 4% or 5% and that, therefore, bookies depend on large numbers to make their money.

And there you have it – small margins and large numbers. Or put another way, little and often. Simple isn’t it?

What’s this got to do with you? Well, if the bookmaker doesn’t believe in luck and is quite happy to make a relatively small profit on a wager – (in percentage terms, remember, little and often) – then why not you? If you want to consistently profit in gambling, then you need to start betting smarter. You need to retrain your mind. Start thinking like a bookmaker.

This is not as easy as you might think, however, for the simple reason that most people gamble with one aim in mind – to get in return significantly more than they stake. Understandable but, ultimately, flawed. Even experienced bettors make this mistake. And it’s a mistake that the bookmakers cherish and encourage. Consider this: why are bookies seemingly delighted to publicise the punter who wins £10,000 from his seven horse 50 pence accumulator? Why would they be so happy to lose so much money? For the simple reason that they know it happens so infrequently. They know for every 1 winning seven horse accumulator there will be tens of thousands of others that will lose, so it’s ultimately in their interests to encourage this kind of rainbow-chasing.

So that’s the message of this article. Start retraining yourself. When people bet on football over 99% of them will wager in multiples – accumulators to you and me. A 4 team accumulator, for example, or a correct score double, typically to return at least 5/1, usually much more. Test your resolve. Try betting in singles. Try increasing your stake by much smaller margins, 60% or 80% or 110% or the like. In those three examples a £10 stake will give you a profit of £6 or £8 or £11. Instead of saying that’s hardly worth it, start the retraining by saying a £6 or £8 or £11 profit is perfectly acceptable and you’re on your way. Next time I’ll tell you how you can take your new philosophy to the next logical level.

Oh, and good luck.
