Argentina's Lionel Messi shown red: 'Referee should've gone to VAR' – Steve Nicol | Copa America

Steve Nicol, Gab Marcotti, Paul Mariner and Dan Thomas of ESPN FC react to Lionel Messi’s red card he received for an altercation with Gary Medel during Argentina’s 2-1 win vs. Chile in the Copa America third-place match. Nicol sternly feels VAR should’ve been consulted, which he thinks would’ve reduced Messi’s red card to a yellow. Marcotti also delves into what the future holds for Lionel Messi following another international disappointment for his country.

  1. That was not a red card. The corruption in South American football, when it comes to the refs has been around for decades. These refs are garbage. The best refs in the world are from Europe and the best refs should ref every international tournament around the world!

  2. CONMEBOL is a corrupt body..no doubt about it..but CONMEBOL must think that if they ban Messi..the Copa becomes so dull no one will watch it.. Messi is the reason billions watch Argentina & Barcelona.

  3. VAR for what?!! They knew both were penalty ,If ref check the VAR than no excuse ,he must call for penalty, now ref says he didn`t make mistake & don`t need the VAR, bullsh1t. 3 goals for Uruguay did not count cuz of VAR check but this game ??!!! Woooowwww what the scandal !!!!!!!!!

  4. Messi fan be like: okay boys, this time no higuain no one to blame umm so New higuain will be pitch, VAR and Ref. This our new excuse mission. Lets start keyborad war and our operations name will be #DefendMessiInAnyCost ?

    Chelsea vs Barcelona 8/9 ?
Messi you didn't say a word.

  5. Finally, someone whose on equal ground!! The ref decision was unfair but MESSI SHOULD HAVE TURN AROUND AND WALK AWAY after the 1st and 2nd headbutt. It seems kinda intentional as if he was trying to provoke Medel while standing his ground and walking towards Medel. Then again I guess he was in the heat of the moment to think otherwise. At least he did not fake a injury or roll on the ground like drama queen Neymar.

  6. Exactly what the Scot says, If Messi would’ve just walked away then there probably wouldn’t of been a red card for either of them. But because Messi let it go on he is just as responsible as Madel was therefore they both get red cards.

  7. Red card was too much . I'm actually shocked it was a red and at both also . Yellow card for pushing a player even when you lost the ball and can't get it back as it's going out and pushing a player towards a man already running out to the boards. Yes definitely a yellow. But not a red especially when no players got hurt . And Yes I'm a Ronaldo product. Lel
