Diego Maradona is the most important figure EVER in Argentina – Ricardo Ortiz | ESPN FC

Just how important was Diego Maradona to Argentina? ESPN Deportes’ Ricardo Ortiz describes the mood in Argentina, the people gathering outside Boca Juniors’ stadium and how “an idol turned into a legend” after he sadly passed away at just 60-years-old. ESPN FC’s Craig Burley talks through Maradona’s importance to the entire world, how players all wanted photographs with him because “that’s how much people hold him with respect.” Gab Marcotti explains why Maradona resonated so much with the world because of his “anti-establishment” approach on and off the pitch.

  1. WE ♥️ DM
Nothing matters more in life than
    relationships and experiences …
    Diego Maradona knew it well.
    All too human.

  2. This guy is argentinian and said that bullshit?? José de San Martín is the biggest argentinian figure ever, without San Martín there was no Argentina. Maradona is an icon, yeah, just like Evita, Ernesto Guevara, Fangio, Guillermo Vilas, Pope Francis, Lionel Messi, Mario Kempes, etc, etc, etc.

  3. I've been to Naples on holiday and it is true, everywhere I went there were shrines to Maradona, or pictures of him on the wall in bars and restaurants.

I live in Edinburgh, Scotland and my two favourite pizzerias both do Neapolitan style pizzas, which is the best in my opinion. One of them is called Pizzeria 1926, named after the year Napoli FC was founded, and the walls are covered with Maradona memorabilia.

  4. One of the most important things that makes Diego's myth the greatest in football history is how that 86 world cup where Argentina did not have the greatest team in their history maradona takes to victory in an american world cup where the only american team alive by the semis was argentina with 3 other Europeans. Also, where mighty brazil had fallen to france in a very close match. Maradona did not win a world cup for Argentina. Maradona won a world cup for america.

  5. I think there is not a higher success in life than making happy millions of people with your skills…. Diego was a gifted one, who shared it with everyone…. he was connected with that special mysthic energy that created happinness around him… I think that he was soooo generous that he give himself too much to others at the point to getting void inside and fill that hole with the demons we all know….

  6. Maradona was a great player but he didn’t do much after his playing career was over. Drug and alcohol abuse lead to his health deterioration ..

    P.S Messi is better .

  7. Το ποδοσφαιρο ειναι ο Μαραντόνα και ο Μαραντόνα πολλά περισσότερα απο το ποδόσφαιρο.

  8. Not just the most famous Argentina person… everybody knows who Maradona is…truly a world icon…up there with Muhammad Ali…Ayton senna…kobe Bryant and George best! Rip Diego! X

  9. Younger generations know who Maradona is, not so much who Ali was or represented. Thats what makes Maradona the most iconic super star in sports. Just watch what he generates among people of all ages, despite if you like him or not. Maradona was way more than a hand of god goal (Shilton is responsible for that goal by the way) he was the one that played and scored in the most artistic way ever seen in this sport. Multiple times. Thats the difference, where some people see a hand, other people see an act of justice that they dont have in their lives, around the globe. Soccer-football, is just the excuse. Ali, in his greatness and without drugs, cant reach what Maradona means for millions of people.

  10. He is the world's biggest icon and legend in football history. Like Bruce Lee is for martial arts, how Bob Marley is for reggae, how Muhammed Ali was for boxing.
