World Cup 1990 Final. Argentina vs West Germany (Highlights)

The 1990 FIFA World Cup Final was a football match played between West Germany and Argentina to determine the winner of the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The game took place on 8 July 1990 at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy’s capital and largest city, Rome, and was won 1–0 by West Germany, with a late penalty kick taken by Andreas Brehme being the game’s only goal.

The match marked several firsts in World Cup history. This was the first rematch of a final and, to date, the only back-to-back rematch, as Argentina defeated West Germany in the previous final. Argentina became both the first team to fail to score in a World Cup final, and the first defending champion to reach the final and lose. West Germany’s victory over Argentina marked the first time a UEFA side defeated a CONMEBOL side in a final (all previous finals between the two continents were won by South Americans).

West Germany became the first team to play in three consecutive finals (they played in the 1982 and 1986 finals), a feat only repeated by Brazil in 1994, 1998, and 2002. It was West Germany’s last World Cup match; the team played three more games before a unified German team was formed later in 1990, as a result of the reunification of the country after more than 40 years.

Argentina vs Brazil – WC 1990 – Round of 16 – Maradona Magic

or exactly 80 minutes Sunday, Diego Armando Maradona did absolutely nothing.
Then, in the 81st minute, he struck. The result knocked three-time champion Brazil out of the World Cup, 1-0, and moved defending champion Argentina into the quarterfinals.
Maradona, who was whistled and booed every time he touched the ball by the largely pro-Brazilian crowd of 61,381, did not score the goal that gave Argentina its victory–that pleasure went to Claudio Caniggia–but he did create it.
For well over an hour, Brazil hammered at Argentina’s defense, setting up one chance after another to score. Somehow, it never did. One attempt hit the left post, another was tipped onto the right post by the goalkeeper. Some shots flew barely wide, others were saved. None went in.
Finally, in the 81st minute, it happened.

Maradona collected the ball about 40 yards from goal and set off on a run directly down the throat of Brazil’s defense. He eluded one would-be tackle from Alemao, shrugged off another from Dunga and, with three defenders closing in on him, sent a superb pass between them to the unrushing Caniggia.

The latter, left unguarded, had the simple task of rounding Brazilian goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel and side-footing the ball firmly into the open net.

Never mind that Brazil took 11 shots to only six for Argentina. Never mind that Brazil had 11 corner kicks and Argentina four.
