  1. Messi literally missed a penalty that cost Argentina a Copa America trophy. He missed one against Iceland last world cup that cost them a victory and missed one against Poland where his teammates covered his blushes and carried him to a victory. The guy chokes unless he's stat padding against teams like Eibar or St. Etienne… let Martinez or DiMaria take the penalties and quit letting Messi's ego cost you games.

  2. I'm an avid Messi fan, but Argentina means more to me than any 'one' player. I know for a fact that Lautaro is better at PK's than Messi. Messi wants to win. He's not concerned about being the best scorer. If they start using Martinez, so be it…

  3. Messi has missed 5 international penalties, Ronaldo has missed 7. Would love to see espn discuss whether CR should stop taking pens for Portugal. The worst thing about the espn "pundits" is that their general knowledge of statistics is very poor and they don't even bother to learn more to operate with data, not opinions. Concerns every team/player, not just Messi

  4. I find it really amusing that people assume Messi is really bad at the spot. Nope, I am not defending him, but in all honesty, how can a guy who has scored over 100 pens be bad at this.

Penalties are mostly oxymoronic in the world of football. While Messi and Maradona can be considered one of the greatest of all time, they have a relatively above-average track record from the spot. Even by Cristiano Ronaldo's standards, a conversion rate of 83% is not good cause you don't associate the numbers 80, and 83 with players of their caliber.

Coming to my second point I feel for every 10 penalties he takes Leo scores 8 of them and kinda messes up a crucial penalty in a big game at least in the recent years or so against PSG, Real, and now Poland. But he still does score 8 of them and a player of his stature, experience, and skill always has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet for taking a penalty. Also, Messi has been in 9 penalty shootouts throughout his career and has always stepped up first and converted on 8 occasions barring the Chile miss in 2016. That said I would still like him to improve his track record tbh.

  5. Messi converts most of his penalties. He misses some obviously but he still has higher penalty conversion ration than most of the active footballers who's taken over 50 penalties in top leagues. He's just not as good as Ronaldo in penalties and Messi being one of the GOATS people highlight on this aspect too much

  6. If Messi wants to take it, he will take it. And he'll always want to take it. It's not about maximizing the scoring opportunity by a few theoretical % points that matters, it's the leader of the team taking ownership and putting himself over anyone else on the team in the highest preassure situation. It's called leadership.

  7. … What?

He misses one pen and the world ends. It’s a part of the game. I don’t care who’s on the pitch: if Messi is playing, he’s taking it.

  8. Who asks these stupid questions. Messi should take them and will score the next pen as well. He's scored far more than he missed…and people who write these question should realise taking a pen is not an easy thing.
