  1. Let me end this debate once and for all.

Ronaldo is an exceptional goal scoring machine who scored with his feet as well as his head. Period.

Messi scores goals and assists other players in scoring themselves. He is a play maker.. Not just a goal scorer

THAT'S WHY MESSI IS A TAD BETTER THAN RONALDO.
In conclusion CR7 is simply a goal scorer and Messi is a goal scorer as well as a Play Maker.
Both are exceptional at what they do.

  2. Race for Golden Boot:
    Messi, ARG (5, 3)
    Mbappe', FRA (5, 2)
    Giroud, FRA (4)
    Alvarez, ARG (4)

Usually awarded to the Highest goal scorer in FIFA world cup.
However, if there is a TIE then the number of successful assists are also seen, in which case Messi has 3 assists with 5 goals and Mbappe has 2 assists with 5 goals .

If that too ties, then 3 additional parameters are used – "number of minutes played", "quality of goals" and "degree of difficulty " are looked at while scoring the goals as well as the "impact it had for the team".

If there is a TIE between for example Messi & Mbappe' Golden Boot should go to Mbappe' simply bcoz Mbappe played less minutes than Messi (Mbappe came as substitute for 1 match much later).

Also, 3 out of 5 Messi's goals came from penalty kicks in matches against KSA, NED, CRO),

If you analyze the goals carefully, Mbappe's (5) and Alvarez's (4) goals were of highest quality, followed by Giroud and then Messi.

Hence, it teams of quality of goals highest being first , lowest being last:
    Mbappe (5)
    Alvarez (4)
    Giroud (4)
    Messi (5)

If Messi scores more than the other 3, he will win although 3 of his 5 goals have come from penalty kicks, but in case of TIE based on goals & assists, I think it would be unfair to give Messi Golden Boot in my opinion.

The twist is if both Alvarez and Giroud score 1 goal each resulting in 4 way TIE on number of goals or either of them score 2 goals leaving both Mbappe or Messi out of the race !!

  3. Messi is a milk drinker who had it all on a silver platter. CR7 went to different clubs and proved himself each time (as did Maradona). Messi left Barca only because he was forced out, then he picked the easiest option possible: another mickey mouse, lop-sided league with a dominant team in PSG.

  4. I hate the "proverbial rainy night in stoke" argument because it completely favors one type of player. To be fair, I think logically you would have to choose Ronaldo in that situation for his physical stature and ability to score goals in the air, etc. If you think about what attributes of player are negated by conditions, it would be touch, finesse, and precision with the football. If you were to rephrase that and ask "two perfect pitches, bring a player on to win you the game" it would clearly be Messi because what he can do with the football (assist and score) is unbelievable. Absolutely one of a kind. And I think ultimately that is a damning factor for this argument, you have to use conditions to give Ronaldo the advantage.

  5. At some point, one was better than the other over last 15 years. Overall though, beyond just stats, I see it like this. CR7 is an elite goalscorer, has been very clutch over his career, and to me is the better goalscorer than Messi (proved it across multiple leagues). However, Messi is an elite goalscorer AND elite playmaker/chance creator. CR7 is nowhere near Messi in the playmaking/chance creation aspect of the game. Messi is the bow and arrow, CR7 is the arrow. That's how I see their careers, and it's why I rate Messi ahead of CR7
