  1. 1:12 Football is actually played more in australia than league and AFL. AFL counts auskick which is basically coaching clinics in their numbers. Where as football just counts football. If Futsal was counted in those numbers also, the gap would be even wider. Rugby league is two states only. Ironically enough the best team for the past 20 years isn't even from one of those two states which is a sign of how big league is in australia.
As an australian, we were lucky to make the group stage let alone the knockouts.

  2. ESPN Extra Time had a question the other day about who was the unluckiest team at this World Cup. Dunno about this WC but Australia has always been unlucky when it comes to the draw. I don't think any country has faced more former world champions than Australia at the last 5 World Cups.

2006 – Group Stage vs Brazil (Defending Champions)
    2006 – R16 vs Italy
2010 – Group Stage vs Germany
2014 – Group Stage vs Spain (Defending Champions)
2018 – Group Stage vs France
2022 – Group Stage vs France (Defending Champions)
    2022 – R16 vs Argentina

  3. This is why we need to raise the standard of our A league and local players. It's a big task for Football Australia now and it's a big job in front of them. Well done to our Socceroos.

  4. Messi is already the best player of all times, he doesn't need to win the World Cup, there is no point of hiding all the corruption and negotiations between the teams for Argentina to win the world cup. They clearly don't have the best team, Mexico could have beat them if it wasn't because of the Argentinian Coach/Manager, Australia could have easily beat them if again it wasn't because they kept the whole game defending playing on counter attack, if Nederland play defensive against Argentina will be too obvious. Brazil has the best team with the most talented players. They deserve to win with or without Neymar they do an amazing work in the field. My point is, if Argentina wins it will be so obvious the negotiation(corruption) at FIFA level. France, England, Croatia, Brazil, Morocco, Switzerland even Serbia and South Arabia have a better team than Argentina. Everything is arranged. They turned the beautiful game into business what a joke. When Pele won the World cup he had a team of stars, Messi is literally alone, well maybe Di Maria and Dybala but that's it. 3 very experienced players don't make a full team of stars.

  5. Australia be proud! You’ve reached the Top 16 above other powerhouse nations. That was a huge accomplishment already. And to go against Argentina is a huge challenge & honor at the same time.. 🇦🇺

  6. Argentina could have easily slipped up in this game. There were some desperate defending and brilliant slave at the end kept the score to 2 – 1. Yes Argentina had more chances, but it could have been easily 2 – 2 at the 90.

  7. Australia played their HEARTS OUT in the last 5 minutes… They barely touched the ball during the game… Come on, they didn't even really scored… Australia is really tough team, maybe too tough for this sport… We are lucky not to have half of the team out for injuries… Argentina just outclassed Australia today…

  8. Argentina fan here – the Aussies are quality! Great country, great people, and football is going places. Best of luck, a pleasure to play against you guys 🤝

  9. This game went down to the wire, to the very last minute. We always thought that Argentina would beat Aus but for a couple of minutes everyone doubted that. Emi and Lisandro Martinez won that game for Argentina at the end.

  10. So proud of the Aussie boys gave it your all! Playing against Messi would be a dream, the team United the country! The boys are out but the legacy of this tournament will live on 🦘🦘🦘🦘

  11. The defeat was acceptable for both soccer countries. I wish they can perform better in 2026. Australia had even hosted the women's World Cup along with New Zealand the next year, so the Mathildas should have the same good result as the Socceroos.
